RDS Craft Awards Exhibition

RDS Craft Awards Exhibition

Each year during the Dublin Horse Show, works from Ireland's leading craftspeople are exhibited in the RDS Concert Hall. The RDS Craft Awards (formerly RDS Crafts Competition) was established in 1968 and follows an RDS tradition of supporting craft which dates back to the nineteenth century. The Awards showcase and reward excellence in Irish craft and offer an opportunity for craftspeople living and working on the island of Ireland to have their work independently assessed by an expert panel of judges who award cash prizes to the best entries and select works for inclusion in the exhibition. The prize fund in 2017 is in excess of €30,000. The exhibition offers a valuable platform for emerging and established makers to showcase their work to a large audience in a high profile venue with an accompanying catalogue. A wide variety of materials and techniques are showcased, ranging from calligraphy, woodturning, ceramics, jewellery, furniture, textiles and glass to basketry and silversmithing. Craft demonstrations in felting and woodturning will take place throughout the day during the 2017 exhibition run.

The RDS Craft Awards is part of the RDS Arts Programme which supports the transition from student to emerging artist; encouraging the pursuit of a career in craft, visual art and music. The Awards is a vital part of the RDS vision of a culturally and economically flourishing Ireland. This year, Eleanor Haworth won the Emerging Makers Award of Excellence for her jewellery collection, Carapace (above).

All work is available for purchase during the exhibition. On August 1 the winners of the 2017 RDS Craft Awards were announced at the opening of the Exhibition and are available on the awards page. Prior to the opening of the Dublin Horse Show (9th-13th August), the RDS Craft Awards Exhibition will open to the public free of charge from 2nd to the 4th of August 2017.
