Minister Ring Launches Discover Ireland Dublin Horse Show 2012

The 2012 Discover Ireland Dublin Horse Show was launched on the 26th of July at the world famous RDS Showgrounds by Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring who confirmed that Fáilte Ireland has provided €225,000 in financial support for the event

The iconic event will run slightly later this year, from August 15th to 19th, to accommodate the London Olympics.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Ring said:
‘This is a sporting and a tourism highlight, and I’m delighted to be able to launch the event this year. It attracts more than 100,000 visitors to the RDS from Ireland and abroad.

‘Ireland is a horse-loving country, and it’s a great opportunity to profile our equestrian heritage on the world stage. The Horse Show is also a great mix of culture and social glamour.’

With a total prize fund of €944,010, the 2012 Show has a particularly full programme with 131 classes and competitions in total, 87 Showing classes, 29 National Show Jumping classes and 15 International Show Jumping Competitions. The international jumping competitions include the Knight Frank Speed Stakes on Thursday, the FEI Nations’ Cup for the Aga Khan Trophy on Friday, the Land Rover Puissance on Saturday and The Longines International Grand Prix on Sunday.

Commenting on the Dublin Horse Show, Michael Duffy, RDS Chief Executive said:

‘2012 marks the 139th Horse Show, founded to foster and promote Irish equestrianism and the Irish Horse Industry. The importance of the Show is highlighted in research by Indecon that found that the Dublin Horse Show contributes a total direct expenditure of €18m, with €3m of this attributed to overseas visitors to the Show, and a total direct, indirect and induced expenditure of €43m to the Irish Economy annually.

‘This year the Show will have a packed programme of events due to a greater number of horses and ponies entered into the many competitions and classes at the Show this year. This demonstrates that the Irish public’s enthusiasm towards equestrianism and the Horse Show is as strong as ever.

‘The Show combines high quality equestrianism with a wide breadth of entertainment, from the style and glamour of Blossom Hill Ladies’ Day on Thursday to the excitement of the Pony Club Games on Saturday and Sunday. The RDS is delighted to welcome Jean Francois Pignon to the Show; the world-renown stunt rider will demonstrate his horsemanship and riding capabilities every day during the Show. The Show is an experience for the whole family.’

Also speaking at the launch, Fáilte Ireland’s Head of Marketing and eBusiness, Orla Carroll, said:
‘Fáilte Ireland, through Discover Ireland, is once again this year supporting this world-class event as name sponsor. Indeed, Fáilte Ireland recognises the potential the equestrian sector has to attract visitors and holidaymakers to our shores, and nowhere is this commitment to the sector more evident than at the Discover Ireland Dublin Horse Show. The importance of the equestrian product among both domestic and overseas visitors cannot be understated as horse lovers and breeders have put equestrian sport at the centre of our culture.’
